Meet the co-founders
I’m David, one of the co-founders of S.O.S Academy.
I’m currently a final year Biological Sciences student at Imperial College London. I had originally planned to complete my summer lab research at Stanford University but I ultimately decided to return to Auckland due to the current global situation. Following my final semester at Imperial College next year, I plan on pursuing a PHD degree in the field of Immunology.
I graduated from Kings College back in 2017, and like most students at that age I did not have a definitive career choice. I had my mind set to the core idea of Biology due to discovering my passion for Biology earlier in high school through a vast array of science competitions such as Brain Bee. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to choose from a range of universities around the world such as Imperial College London, UCL, Kings College London and National University of Singapore etc .
Graduating high school as a year 12 student made it especially difficult for me, as I had no clue how to apply for the different universities around the world nor did I know which university is the best option for my specific field of study. The other co-founders of S.O.S Academy and I have the same academic background as your typical high school student; we are all New Zealanders and have made our way overseas into some of the best universities in the world. We want to make this process easier for current high school students by giving them the best academic advice and tutoring possible.
I have been tutored by New Zealand based tutoring companies throughout my school life and have tutored for academic companies all over the world including China and the UK, I’ve had years of experience in the education sector whether it’s as a tutor or a tutee. My co-founders and I think there is a significant lack of tutors that have the experience and right mindset to effectively teach high school students in New Zealand and give them insight into their field of interest. That is why we founded the Scholars of Success Academy. We have brought together New Zealand scholars studying at top universities around the world who have recently been through the process of high school exams and university applications so they are able to teach the students how they’ve succeeded and will point the students towards the right resources to create their own success.
I'm Steven, one of the co-founders of S.O.S Academy.
I'm currently a second-year student at Northwestern University studying Chemical Engineering with minors in Economics and Materials Science. I plan on graduating in the next two years through a joint Bachelor's and Master's program in Chemical and Materials Engineering. At Northwestern, I am currently a peer tutor for Economics and an undergraduate researcher in the Stupp group in biomaterials for cellular growth.
I graduated from Auckland Grammar School back in 2018 with very little idea of what I wanted to do at university. Waiting upon my offers from overseas, I took a semester at the University of Auckland studying Sciences and Law. I was very fortunate to have had the tough choice between Imperial College London studying molecular bioengineering and Northwestern University for materials science and engineering. Going overseas wasn't just an eye-opening experience but it also helped me find what I was passionate about in life. When I came back to New Zealand I would always tell my friends how studying overseas has been the best experience in my entire life.
I've always been attracted to the education sector. I had tutored and been tutored for the past 5 years both privately and with organisations across Auckland. I founded the Scholars of Success Academy with a couple of friends because we thought there was a significant lack of tutors who have continued their studies to a university level and have had a continual renewal of their knowledge, understanding, and insight to the subjects.
We decided to gather a group of tutors who have recent experience in sitting these examinations but at the same time have much more specialised knowledge through their University studies. We think that through the guidance and resources from tutors, students can significantly speed up the time it takes to learn and master a subject. They can point you towards the right resources and share their own personal experiences in studying effectively and efficiently. We also want our students to act as mentors and advisors for students, and by having tutors that come from around the world, the tutors can offer students insight into their unique experiences overseas.
My name is Daniel, one of the co-founders of S.O.S Academy.
In 2018, I graduated from ACG Parnell College, a high-achieving and all-round institution based in Auckland, New Zealand. Through a combination of brilliant teachers and hard work, I was able to achieve top grades in my final external examinations.
When the time came for me to make a decision as to which university I was to attend, the opportunity to study at some of the world’s finest back in my home country, Australia, was one I could not refuse. I received offers from the top Australian universities - ANU, The University of Melbourne, and The University of Sydney. I was truly very fortunate to be faced with such amazing options!
Ultimately, I decided to commit to the University of Melbourne where I am currently undertaking my finance and accounting double major. The Melbourne Model not only provides a high degree of variety when it comes to course selection, but also allows me to pursue my dream to study at the Melbourne Law School.
My friends and I founded S.O.S Academy to address an inevitable issue: preparing for examinations and applying for universities can often present as an intimidating and stressful process for many students, ourselves included at the time. We want you to understand, however, that this does not have to be the case! At the Academy, we pride ourselves in our ability to direct fellow students to success through the provision of resources and guidance of exceptional quality. We strive to achieve this through carefully designed approaches to learning, such as our prioritisation of small class sizes (2-3 students). This way we ensure that our teaching standards are always kept to a top standard and that students and tutors alike can receive the best experience.
Even though we aim to ensure that all of our students achieve top grades, our approach places particular emphasis on the importance of our students' wellbeing; a healthy and positive state of mind is one of the most important determinants of success! At S.O.S Academy, we strongly believe the presence of a safe learning environment that allows everyone to feel welcome and engaged is vital in order for students to truly fulfil their potential!
